JOHNSON, Kans. — The Ulysses Lady Tigers were flying high on a windswept Thursday afternoon.

At least for a little while.

The Ulysses varsity softball team handed Stanton County its first loss of the season in game one of Thursday’s double-header in Johnson, taking down the Lady Trojans 12-2 before falling 14-7 in the nightcap.

“I was very pleased with our effort.,” said coach Nathan Buchholz. “We didn’t play very well defensively in the second game, but we fought hard all night. I am very proud of the girls for that.”

Addi Harbour got the win in the first game, scattering four hits and allowing two runs with 10 strikeouts and five walks; she also had three hits and three runs batted in, including a pair of doubles in the first game.

Alexia Sanchez had the big hit of the game with a homerun early, later adding a single. Clarissa Sianqui, Rocio Baeza, and Marisela Meraz all doubled in the first game. Meraz had six total hits and three runs batted in combined in both games; Baeza knocked in six runs combined.

Harbour got the start in the circle in game two, pitching 2-and-a-third innings, giving up five runs and six hits. She was pulled in favor of Devani Manzano, who gave up nine runs on six hits. Both pitchers each struck out six.

“We hit the ball well all day and we pitched well, we have to become more consistent defensively if we want to have a chance to win more games,” Buchholz said.

The Tigers were scheduled to play host to the Hugoton Eagles (4-1) this past Tuesday, Scott Community Thursday and travel to Goodland April 16.
