Core Community hosted a free authentic German dinner March 22 at the Grant County Civic Center. A fundraiser for the local organization, co-directors Sheila and Ivan Koop say the event brought in more than $5,500 for the organization.

"We served over 100 people, including the high school kids who were seving the meal," said Sheila.

Ulysses High School students who assisted with serving the meal were some of the athletes from the softball and track teams.

"They did a wonderful job," said Ivan.

Attendees of the event enjoyed a German-Mennonite meal consisting of Veranika (dumplings), KeelKea (egg noodles), vegetables, Ruakworscht (smoked sausage), Zwieback (dinner roll) and a dessert.

A note from Sheila and Ivan on the placements of the tables, explained the meal.

"German Mennonites migrated to Russia to escape religious persecution," the note states. "After years of prosperity in Russia they were once again persecuted for their religious beliefs. Many lost their lives and others fled to Canada and the United States of America (Oklahoma and Kansas). These are some of the delicious foods they brought with them."

Monies raised from the event came from a silent auction and a call for pledges.
